Who I am – Martin Mason

Head of learning and development at Wolseley

I love having such a people-focused role. I’m responsible for overseeing the employee development activity across our UK business, which involves working alongside our leadership team to ensure we have a learning and talent strategy that enables the future success of the business.

We don’t use data analytics enough in HR. There’s so much potential for us to show that our profession doesn’t live up to its ‘light and fluffy’ stereotype by getting hold of tangible numbers to prove things such as return on investment. I would love HR data to be taken more seriously by other departments.

I listen to my iPod, hands-free, while driving to work. The journey takes around an hour, so I have the chance to listen to some cheesy pop. It also gives me time to take a few calls and cram in some meetings.

Pay rises aren’t the only way to motivate staff. Flexible benefits packages that employees can tailor to where they are in their personal and professional life can be much more effective. I think the working environment itself and the value placed on staff as individuals are also really powerful.

Being inspirational, engaging and motivating are key qualities of any good leader. But the most important components are patience and empathy – I believe you can’t underestimate their significance in a great leader, especially in someone who has integrity and compassion intertwined in everything they do.

Working for Disney or Google would be a dream come true. I love my job, but I’d really like to progress my career at a world-renowned creative brand in the future if I had the opportunity.

I think HR will become more automated in the future. The sector has to find the intricate balance between moving with technology and remembering that there are simply some things you cannot do without people’s unique input.
