NHS Employers announces new chief executive

Appointee brings frontline HR experience and workforce strategy skills

Danny Mortimer has been appointed as the chief executive of the NHS Employers organisation, he will take up the post later this year. 

Succeeding Dean Royles, who left earlier this month, Mortimer joins NHS Employers from Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust where he was director of workforce and strategy. He has worked in the health service for more than 20 years, as a porter and a healthcare assistant before he attended the NHS regional training programme in the West Midlands.

Rob Webster, chief executive of the NHS Confederation, the umbrella body of which NHS Employers is a part, said: "Danny was an outstanding candidate and will be a genuine asset. He brings many years of frontline HR experience and real proficiency in tackling the workforce issues currently facing the service. His relationships with the NHS Confederation, through the NHS Employers Policy Board, gives a good balance of fresh ideas and energy, while maintaining continuity and momentum. It’s an exciting time for the health service and NHS Employers is a key element in ensuring its future success.”

Mortimer said: “I've been proud and privileged to be part of the board at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. It is a superb organisation, in a superb community, and I have been fortunate to work with terrific colleagues inside and outside the trust.

“I've always been impressed by the talent and commitment of the NHS Employers team, so I am truly delighted to join them as chief executive, and look forward to continuing to deliver on the ambitious agenda that is essential to progress for the health service, the people it employs, and those it serves.”

His previous roles have included personnel manager and general manager at the Royal United Hospital, Bath, and deputy director of personnel at Brighton Health Care. His first director post was a joint role for Royal West Sussex NHS Trust and Western Sussex PCT. He subsequently became director of HR and organisational development at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. He is a fellow of the CIPD has been a member of the NHS Employers Policy Board since 2006, and its vice chair since June 2008.
